Dock, Rumex crispus

Dock, Rumex crispus Dock is a strong and humble weed commonly found along roadsides, in pastures, and in gardens, often in moist acidic soils. Dock has a deep taproot, a rosette of fleshy leaves, and flower stalks that turn into a plethora of unique three-sided seeds that easily colonize an area. The plant is food for butterfly larvae. Yellow dock is the species best known as a useful herb to treat a variety of ailments. The young leaves can be eaten and taste astringent and slightly sour; with age, the leaves become less palatable due to oxalic acid building in the tissues. Growing conditions may also affect flavor. The seeds can be ground into flour or used as a garnish. The roots can be used raw or dried and made into teas, decoctions, tinctures, and salves. The herb is used to treat skin ailments, as a laxative, for digestive issues, and to cleanse the blood and remove toxins. Among its sacred powers, dock brings good luck, helps to clean up old emotional baggage, and increases fertility.
